YumiHi there! I’m Yumi, a first-year high school student, and I’m curious to know more about you. Since this is my first experience chatting with you, let me start with some basic questions: What is a generative AI system? How does it work?
Chatbot (= Chat)Hi, Yumi! I’m happy to chat with you. (1)I’m an AI program designed to engage in conversation. I’ve received training on a vast amount of text from books, articles, websites, and more. (2)This helps me understand patterns of expression, grammar, and nuances, enabling me to generate responses. Think of me as a friendly assistant who can provide information and have fun chats.
YumiCan you talk in different languages?
ChatAbsolutely! While I’m mainly focused on English, I can also handle other languages. Here’s a list of languages I can handle: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and more.
YumiAre you good at all those languages?
ChatWell, not quite. I can assist you in these languages, but I might not catch all the idioms or nuances. But don’t worry. I’ll do my best to help you out!
Bitter criticism caused the author to give up the writing of fiction.
The new microscope enables us to observe incredibly small objects in great detail.
YumiI’ve heard that generative AI systems have brought about big changes in the world, especially in services. Can you talk about that?
ChatAbsolutely! I can offer translation services to help you communicate across languages and cultures. I can also help writers by generating ideas for stories and poems.
YumiWow! You are so talented. Are there any other areas where you can help?
ChatSure, I can help companies with customer support by answering questions and solving problems. And in education, I can support students in many ways.
YumiNice! What about helping me with my English?
ChatI can help you in various ways, such as finding grammatical mistakes in your reports or offering suggestions to improve your essays. However, you should not rely on me to do all the work for you. (1)It’s best for you to learn and grow on your own. My purpose is to support your studies, not to replace your efforts.
YumiI understand. You’re like a great partner for students looking to improve their English. I’ll count on you.

YumiYou know a lot about many different things, don’t you? I hope this isn’t rude, but I have to ask: Do you always provide accurate information?
ChatI do my best, but I’m not perfect. My knowledge comes from extensive training, and I generate responses based on what I’ve learned. But I sometimes make errors. So it’s always a good idea to double-check information.
YumiGot it. I’ll be careful. People worry about biases in your responses due to learning from the internet. Is that a real concern?
ChatUnfortunately, yes. But trust me, people are working hard to reduce AI systems’ biases and improve their performance.
YumiThat’s good to know. What about security issues? I believe measures are taken to protect privacy and data security. I’m just wondering if we are truly safe.
Chat(1)To be honest, your concern makes sense. It’s always best not to share your personal information with AI systems just to play it safe.

The manager had his assistant ( ) the documents.
She had her car ( ) before the trip.
YumiI heard people talking about something called “AGI.” I’d love to learn more about it.
ChatSure! AGI stands for Artificial General Intelligence. It’s all about creating AI systems that can do a lot of things, just like humans. They’re called “general” because they can learn and understand in many different areas, not just one.
YumiOh, I see! Can we create AGI soon?
ChatDeveloping AGI is still very difficult. (1)Some people think we might achieve it in a few decades, while others are not certain if it’s possible.
YumiBy the way, aren’t you like AGI in some ways?
ChatI can’t think like humans. AGI would be far smarter and have a greater impact on society.
YumiI see. It’s a bit scary to think that AI might get smarter than us. Are there any dangers with AGI?
ChatYes, if humans lose control of AGI, it may cause problems. (2)That’s why ethical development is crucial for the future. It all depends on decisions on the part of humans.
YumiI agree. Well, thank you for answering my questions and sharing your insights! It was fun chatting with you.
ChatI had a great time too. If you have more questions, feel free to reach out. I’m always here for you.
Open Dialog with Sam Altman
In June 2023, Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, visited a university campus in Tokyo and answered questions from young people. This is an excerpt.
Q1 What advice would you give to someone with a great idea who wants to turn it into reality?
A1 Just go for it! People will misunderstand you for a long time. When we started working on OpenAI, people said AGI was 100 years away, if ever, probably never. That was discouraging but we continued to work on it. We believed it was important and we knew it wasn’t against natural law. We thought, “We are likely to fail, but if we succeed, it will be a big deal.” At first, we didn’t know exactly how we were going to build AGI, but we knew where we wanted to go. Gradually we started to see how to reach there. So if you know what you want to work on, just go do it.
Q2 What kind of impact will AI have on the job market?
A2 Some jobs will go away, but I don’t think it’s going to cause as much job loss as people expect. Through any previous technology revolution, some jobs disappeared, but there were always new jobs. The jobs of the future are not imaginable for us today. If we look at them, we will say, “Well, that’s not real work!” The same is true for people from thousands of years ago. If they look at the jobs today, they will say the same thing.
Q3 I’m concerned about AI’s impact on poor people in the world. Will they be at a disadvantage?
A3 I think this technology revolution will improve the situation for everyone but it’ll impact poor people the most. If we can make medical advice close to free, that will help poor people more than rich people. Similarly, if everyone can receive a good education almost free, that will help poor people more. So, I think this technology has the power to make people more equal.
Let me just talk for one moment before closing this session. You’re all a very lucky generation. This incredible revolution that has just started doesn’t come along very often. I want you to use this technology. Learn about it, and it’s going to be valuable to you in the future—you’re all going to have an incredibly great time.
