People follow it whenever they meet someone they know, especially at parties or family gatherings. They do the same thing when they say goodbye. According to my tutor, this custom started because it shows that you are treating the other person like family. She also told me about Three Kings Day, which is an important holiday in Spain. On that day, children receive presents in the morning and families eat a special ring-shaped cake with a toy inside. Overall, I found that greetings in Spain are much closer than in Japan.
