Roots & Shoots

Jane Goodall is famous not only for her work with chimpanzees but also for her effort to conserve nature. Here, Ken 1語 her about her life and work.

Jane: When I was 11, I knew that 1語 I would go to Africa to live with animals.

Ken: I'm sure there are lots of young people who want to work with animals 1語. How can they prepare themselves?

Jane: There are a lot of things you can do 3語 understand animals. It is very important that you watch them and 1語 their 1語. It is also important that you write notes and ask questions. If you are really 1語, you’ll have to work really hard. 3語 every opportunity, and don’t give up.

Ken: You did a lot of 1語, observing chimpanzees in the wild. Are they 3語 like humans?

Jane: Chimps and humans 5語, sharing 98.6 percent of DNA. The members of a chimp family are very close, often helping 2語.

Ken: What about their character—2語, are they friendly? Are they cruel?

Jane: They are usually friendly, but they can be 1語, just like humans. The males sometimes attack chimps from another community to protect their 1語. He shared his food if Mel 2語 it. Chimps can indeed be loving and 1語.

Jane: It is called Roots & Shoots because roots can 4語 rocks to reach water. And shoots can 2語 a wall to reach the sunlight.

Jane: The world is a better place … when a dog 1語 its tail for you. People should think about the 1語 of the little choices they make each day.

Jane: You are just one person, but what you do affects the whole world. If a thousand, then a million, finally a billion people all make those changes, this is going to 4語.
