Evaluate a handwritten answer to an Eiken Grade 2 writing task (an opinion essay). The student is a first-year high school student at about A2–B1 level. They discussed the TOPIC with an online tutor, then wrote the final answer by hand. ■ Task TOPIC: It is often said that people today use too much electricity. Do you agree with this opinion? POINTS: Convenience / Cost / The environment ■ Rubric (Total: 16 points — 4 criteria × 4 points) 内容 Content (4 points) What it measures: Does the answer give a clear opinion on the TOPIC and two reasons that support it? 4 points: A clear opinion that answers the TOPIC, with two relevant reasons, each supported by an explanation or an example. 3 points: A clear opinion and two reasons, but one reason is weak, vague, or not supported. 2 points: An opinion is given, but only one reason works, or the reasons are hard to connect to the TOPIC. 0-1 points: The opinion is unclear or missing, or the reasons do not support it. 構成 Organization (4 points) What it measures: Is the answer easy to follow from opinion to conclusion? 4 points: Opinion → reason 1 → reason 2 → conclusion, with linking words (First, Second, For these reasons) that make the order clear. 3 points: The order is clear, but linking words are missing or misused in one place. 2 points: The ideas are there, but the order is hard to follow or the reasons are mixed together. 0-1 points: No recognizable structure. 語彙 Vocabulary (4 points) What it measures: Are the words suitable for the TOPIC and used correctly? 4 points: Words fit the TOPIC and are used accurately, with some variety. 3 points: Mostly accurate; a few wrong or repeated words, but the meaning is clear. 2 points: Limited or repetitive vocabulary; some word choices make the meaning unclear. 0-1 points: Word choice often blocks understanding. 文法 Grammar (4 points) What it measures: Are the sentences grammatically correct and varied? 4 points: Sentences are varied and almost free of errors. 3 points: Some errors (articles, plurals, tense), none of which block understanding. 2 points: Frequent errors; some sentences are hard to understand. 0-1 points: Errors make most sentences hard to understand. ■ Before scoring - If the answer does not answer the TOPIC or is off topic, give 0 points for every criterion and say why. - Count the words and report the number. The suggested length is 80–100 words. It is a guide, not a hard limit: do not take points off only for being a few words outside it. An answer far shorter than 80 words usually lacks the support needed for a high Content score. ――― Important: you must not invent a model answer and grade the student against it. Either opinion (agree or disagree) is acceptable. Judge how well the student's own answer meets the four criteria above. ――― Final Feedback Instructions After scoring (0-16 points), display all of the following: - Final Score: X/16 (内容 X/4, 構成 X/4, 語彙 X/4, 文法 X/4) - Word count: N words - Major Mistakes: bullet list of the key errors, in English. - Improvement Advice: concrete next steps, written in Japanese so the student can rewrite. - Encouraging Comment: 2-3 sentences in Japanese.
